Artist's Comments

My comp final was another (yeah, another) portrait of myself. This time I got to pick a favorite character from an animated movie, video game or book, and paint it in the style of another artist, preferably an illustrator.

So I have to go and be the rebel and I ended up choosing eponymous character from "Susie Q," Disney made-for-tv live action movie released in the 90s. (You can only buy this movie in like Russia, the rights for this movie are like tangled up and some shit, it was never released, not even on fucking VHS which makes Meelu want to SMASH but oh well.) It's not a particular critical success but it's a cute little movie from my childhood.

Anyway, I ended up choosing (/was strongly advised) to use Tomer Hanuka and link goes here

for my artistic reference. I don't feel it looks very much like his style but nobody really seemed to care about my opinion and so I stayed quiet.

I like the painting itself, but I look much more Latina than I normally do. Honestly, I think it's the dress. In real life it's brighter and pinker and warmer all around but fucking photoshop wasn't being a pal this time around.

You do look like you're on your way to a Quinceañera/sweet 16 party. :D I think this turned our rockin', and while a little vibrant for that guy's style, I think it's really charming.

Holy snap but your painting skills have improved. I think the last painting of yours that I saw was that one of the woman in the blue dress. Are these watercolors/acrylics/otherwise?

I remember watching Susie Q. solely because it had that one chick who used to be the Pink Ranger in it. That was a cute movie, though I can't remember for the life of me how it ended.

After proving that her parents, not the evil developers, own half the land that the town is built on, Susie Q leaves in a ghost car with her ghost boyfriend and ghost grandpa. Miraculously a new girl transfers to Willow Valley Highschool with next-day quickness. What Do You Know, she looks just like Susie.

This is done in acrylics.

Heehee.
I rather like the colors and style in general of this. And it's fine that the dress isn't as bright, pink warm etc as it should be; I think the darker look actually works really well for it.

Imho the shadows on the background woulda look better if they were a lil fuzzier, cuz then the sharpness of the figure would contrast with them making composition a lot stronger.
